We are thrilled to announce that Durham Mayor, Bill Bell, has proclaimed the first Monday in September as Living Wage Day in Durham.  It’s encouraging to see our city make a commitment to be on the path to $15 for all city workers, and to acknowledge the disparity between the federally mandated minimum wage of $7.25/hour and the rising cost of living in Durham. 100 Local Employers Now Qualify as “Living Wage Certified” Durham, N.C. — The Durham Living Wage Project announced today that 100 local firms have met the requirements to be certified as “living wage employers,” representing a broad array of sectors, from landscaping to restaurants, daycares, breweries and more. These firms are at the forefront of a new movement in Durham that urges employers to pay a living wage, certifies and publicly recognizes employers, and promotes living wages as a matter of conscience within our community.  Continue reading

The People’s Alliance Fund seeks a creative and dynamic professional to serve as Project Coordinator and Outreach Specialist for the Durham Living Wage Project (DLWP). The DLWP is a newly launched local employer certification program, designed to recognize “high road employers” who pay their employees a living wage. The coordinator will oversee the certification process with employers and work with the steering committee to grow the project. The coordinator will be instrumental in building and cultivating relationships with employers and managing the certification committee and process. The position is currently hiring for 10 hours per week, however candidates looking to grow with us and/or work on additional projects are encouraged to apply. Continue reading

The Durham Living Wage Project is excited to announce that our “Living Wage Song Project” is now live! This fundraising effort is a collaboration with local singer-songwriter Charles Latham, who will donate all sales from the digital release of the full-band version of his song, “The Living Wage”, to The Durham Living Wage Project as well as its “sister” organization, The Scottish Living Wage Campaign. By Elizabeth Poindexter A couple of months after moving to Durham in 2013, I heard about Cocoa Cinnamon, a local coffee shop whose entryway features mismatched, rainbow-colored chairs and vintage maps. During my most recent visit, I listened to soft piano music as the barista made my drink, an iced coffee with hints of rosemary and vanilla. I initially visited the shop for its lauded coffee, but I’ve found Cocoa Cinnamon’s dedication to paying its employees a living wage just as impressive as its drinks. Continue reading
